Over the last few years, a new cash crop is taking over the farming scene: CBD/Hemp Flower. According to new data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), farmers in the U.S. have more than quadrupled the land planted with hemp in the past year, from 27,424 acres in August 2018 to 128,320 acres today. Hemp farming is experiencing the fastest growth out of any crop in the United States, with a 368% increase over the course of a year. The next runner up is maple sap, with an 85% growth rate from 2018 to 2019.
Aside from the fact that demand for CBD has skyrocketed lately, hemp farmers were spurred by the 2018 Farm Bill, which removed industrial hemp and all CBD products from their longstanding Schedule 1 category of the DEA’s Controlled Substances Act. Hemp is defined as having less than 0.3% THC by dry weight.
Now that it’s legal, there’s nothing stopping farmers from cashing in on the CBD boom. “There are a lot of things you can do on a farm, but there aren’t a lot of things you can do to make money,” Will Brownlow, a Kentucky farmer said in an interview with Quartz. He said an acre of soybeans would typically net him about $500, but an acre of hemp with high quality CBD flowers could pull in as much as $30,000.
What are CBD Flowers or Hemp Buds?
Just like with traditional buds that grow on cannabis plants, ‘hemp buds’ are the flowers that grow on hemp plants. They look just like the flowers we’re used to seeing at dispensaries and on the street, then even smell and taste the same.
That’s because they contain all the same cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids as regular cannabis buds, but they are miss one major component that separates them from their psychoactive counterpart: THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol – or THC – is the most dominant cannabinoid in regular cannabis plants, and it’s the one that’s associated with the feeling of being ‘high’.
Legally, the THC content in CBD flower is 0.3% or less, but the amount of THC in a plant directly correlates to the amount of levels of CBD in the buds. Research shows that if the final product is closer to that cutoff point, it will contain higher levels of CBD.
Hemp flower can be used in the same ways as regular cannabis – mainly smoking or vaping with a dry herb vaporizer. This variety of buds are becoming increasingly popular because they can help people relax, they can be used to manage pain and anxiety, and they don’t have the intoxicating effects of THC. This can be a major selling point for some consumers.
What Does This All Mean For You?
If you’re like most cannabis consumers, you’ve probably heard quite a bit about smokeable hemp flower lately. Actually having tried it is another story though. They can be rather difficult to find in local dispensaries, even in sophisticated markets like California.
Luckily, the upcoming harvest (which again, will be the largest hemp flower harvest to date) means that deals on CBD flowers abound! Aside from introducing the new strains farmers have been growing this year, many suppliers are trying to get rid of the remainders from last year’s inventory. This translates to extremely low prices for the consumer.
For example, in our newsletter we have 2 CBD Flower deals, one of which includes top-shelf buds for only $2.50 per gram!
