1 – Anatomy of a Fall

The film’s narrative centres around the tumultuous relationship between a woman and a man, both of whom are fiction writers. The drama unfolds in a courtroom setting, following the man’s death after falling from a window of their home. What makes the film particularly compelling for a stoned viewing is its intense focus on the domestic life of the couple, examined through the lens of the justice system. The courtroom drama dissects not just the incident but also delves into gender roles and the pressures of a creative life. The Guardian writes:

2 – Killers of the Flower Moon

“Killers of the Flower Moon,” directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese, is a masterful adaptation of David Grann’s 2017 nonfiction book. This true crime saga set in the early 1920s in Osage County, Oklahoma, is a gripping account of a shocking episode in US history. The film revolves around the Osage Native Americans, who, due to geological fate, find themselves wealthy after the discovery of vast oil reserves on their reservation. This newfound wealth attracts attention, leading to a series of murders orchestrated by the machiavellian cattle rancher William Hale, played by a towering Robert De Niro. Leonardo Di Caprio stars as Ernest Burkhart, Hale’s dull-edged nephew, who becomes entangled in his uncle’s sinister plans. It’s great to see Di Caprio’s performance as Ernest, because it’s a departure from his usual roles, portraying a character who is both clueless and tragically manipulated. Scorsese’s direction ensures that the film is more than just a crime drama; it’s a commentary on cultural and historical exploitation. Many are saying that this is the well-known director back to his best. The Guardian, giving it 5 stars, describes it as:

The film has a star-studded cast, all of whom really pull out incredible performances. The list includes: Jacob Elordi, Barry Keoghan, Carey Mulligan, Richard E Grant and Rosamund Pike. The film’s visual vibes, absurd moments, and luxurious depictions of aristocratic wealth are central to its appeal. These elements, along with the bold telegraphing of desire, create an experience that is more about the sensory and emotional impact than the narrative coherence. This approach makes the movie particularly suitable for a high viewing experience, where the focus is on the abstract stuff, rather than the actual narrative. If you wanna have a bit of a mind-blowing weed moment, then watch it.
4 – Napoleon
Release Date: 22nd November
Next up, we have potentially the most epic film on this list. Ridley Scott’s historical stunner, “Napoleon”, has made a significant impact at the global box office. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the infamous French ruler, the film debuted to a robust $78.8 million, including $46.3 million internationally. This impressive performance highlights the film’s global appeal. The movie presents a detailed and dramatic portrayal of one of history’s most iconic figures. Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Napoleon Bonaparte brings a complex and nuanced interpretation to the character, capturing the ambition, brilliance, and eventual downfall of the French leader. The film’s focus on Napoleon’s military campaigns, political manoeuvres, and personal life offers a comprehensive look at his impact on history. The Guardian, with another 5 stars, writes:
“Phoenix is the key to it all: a performance as robust as the glass of burgundy he knocks back: preening, brooding, seething and triumphing.”

5 – How to Have Sex

This is probably a lesser known movie, but it certainly deserves its place on the list the most. “How to Have Sex,” a debut feature from British filmmaker Molly Manning Walker, is a film that combines full-on energy, likeable performances, and a blend of humour and depth to discuss a topic that is definitely not looked at enough: consent. Set in the party town of Malia in Crete, the film follows three 16-year old teenage girls, Tara, Skye, and Em, as they embark on a holiday filled with the anticipation of adventure and the looming reality of exam results. The film’s central character, Tara (played incredibly by Mia McKenna-Bruce), is the shyest of the trio and her quest for her first sexual experience is a significant theme of the movie. However, in the end, Tara does not have the holiday she hoped for. The film explores the complexities of sexual experiences for young people. It particularly delves into the concept of consent, presenting it in a nuanced and thought-provoking manner. The Guardian writes:
“With banteringly concealed envy Skye asks Tara how it was: “Did he throw you around and that?” Did he? Does Tara want to remember it that way? Does she want to remember it at all? Consent is ambiguous. The film shows that the post-sex phase in Tara’s mind is perhaps composed of an inner negotiation: should she forget it and move on?”
People assume that stoned-minds can’t appreciate the more nuanced films, but I don’t believe that to be the case. In fact, some of my favourite and most memorable movies have been the ones I have watched high. That is why this important, lesser-known, indie film deserves to be on the list this winter.
6 – Wonka
Release Date: 8th December
I know it’s not out yet, but this film promises to be an incredible new rendition of the beloved Willy Wonka story by Roald Dahl. “Wonka,” directed by Paul King, known for his work on “Paddington,” is a prequel film that delves into the origin story of the famous chocolatier, Willy Wonka. The film, set for release on December 8th, has generated significant buzz and anticipation, with its opening weekend box office projections increasing to a promising $35-$40 million. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the titular role, “Wonka” features an ensemble cast including Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant, who intriguingly plays an Oompa-Loompa. For viewers watching while high, this one promises to be an enchanting journey and potentially a christmas classic.
