Skin care is big business, and is also part of a daily regime for millions of people around the world who want shiny, healthy skin.
Now cannabis topicals or creams are potentially being touted as the ‘skin care products of the future,’ and for good reason.
Certain compounds in cannabis are already famous for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-aging properties. Take hemp seed oil for example, which contains the perfect ratios of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which act as natural moisturizers. And that’s not to mention the various studies showing the connection between CBD and skin.
According to research carried out on the human endocannabinoid system, receptors know as CB1 and CB2 are found throughout the body, with a large concentration of them found in the skin. Since there is a correlation between smoking and ageing skin, cannabis creams could be just the ticket for some people.
Without getting too technical, smoke in all its forms hinders the development of collagen proteins in the skin, leading to a potential for dry skin or even wrinkles. When you use a cannabis topical, no such issue is present.
An interesting study carried out by Faseb et al, suggested that the endocannabinoid system helps regulate the body’s oil production and hair follicle function. This means that the right cannabis cream formula could help protect the skin, and even the hair.
Limited research is available showing the connection between cannabis and healthy hair growth and maintenance. A study showed the connection between THC and anandamide, and its effects on human hair.
While the future of cannabis creams for the skin care market may not be crystal clear right now, there’s no question that there is an interesting connection between cannabis topicals and healthy skin, and that is not something that producers of products will be able to ignore for long.
