WHO Vs. DEA: Why They Can’t Agree On CBD

Written by Corre Addam

The DEA’s long-failing ‘war on drugs’ has been challenged again, and this time it’s the World Health Organization that have something to say…

The Drug Enforcement Agency have been fighting cannabis since the days of President Nixon. And despite so much evidence to the contrary, still pump millions of dollars into enforcing antiquated cannabis laws, and putting people who use the medicinal plant behind bars.

After years of wasted taxpayer money and resources, the DEA may just be ready to hold up the white flag, and admit they were wrong. And if WHO has anything to do with it, that could happen sooner rather than later. Take WHO’s Expert Committee on Drug Dependence report from last month for example, which noted that CBD, the non-psychoactive compound in cannabis, has no dangerous side effects and is totally safe for use medicinally.

That same report also found a bunch of evidence pointing to the numerous medical benefits of CBD for treating epilepsy, depression, chronic pain, and whole host of other conditions. CBD is thought to affect the endocannabinoid system in humans, regulating things like appetite, mood and pain sensations through neurotransmitters that bind to receptors in the nervous system. And while studies pertaining to CBD are a little thin on the ground as of now, no evidence has been found to connect CBD to anything toxic or addictive.

In point of fact quite the opposite is true as highlighted by some clinical studies which found that CBD can treat epilepsy and even completely eradicate seizures in some patients. CBD has also shown potential in treating conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, anxiety, pain, inflammatory bowel disease, and arthritis.

So will the DEA finally take note and listen to the evidence? Or is the age-old ‘War on Drugs’ simply too deeply rooted in the psyche of American law enforcement. The answer on that is “only time will tell.”
