A Guide To The Right CBD Dose

Written by Steven Bridge

While the CBD industry is growing exponentially in leaps and bounds, scientific research and studies on this wondrous cannabis compound are still in short order. One thing that nobody has real clarity about is what the right CBD dose is for which condition.

When it comes to CBD, things such as finding the right product and dose can get very confusing straight from the get-go. It’s particularly a problem for novices and those wanting to try CBD for the first time. For starters, there are different types of CBD, including broad-spectrum CBD and full-spectrum CBD.

Secondly, there are many different delivery methods to choose from, including CBD Oil tinctures, CBD Vape Juice, and CBD Edibles, to name a few. If you’ve managed to ascertain which form of CBD is the right one for you and have chosen a delivery system, it’s time to work out what kind of CBD dosage you should be taking; and therein lies the proverbial rub.

The truth of the matter is that no one knows what the right and most accurate CBD dosage regime should be for any particular person. It depends on many factors such as age, weight, and medical condition, as well as many more.

Due to the lack of scientific CBD research, mainly due to decades of prohibition, we still don’t fully understand how CBD works, why it works and in which dosages it should be administered. It also depends on the condition being treated by CBD, and dosage levels vary greatly depending on the reason for taking it. Some people use CBD for back pain, some for anxiety and depression, and others for arthritis and insomnia.

Dosing With CBD

Since there is no industry standard, people are mostly sticking with experimentation when it comes to CBD dosing

For the time being, there is no standardized dosing protocol for CBD, so it’s all down to experimentation and a lot of trial and error. The good news there is that CBD is non-toxic even in large doses and is not typically associated with any serious or long-term side effects. Self-titration is the best way to start when it comes to the issue of dosing correctly with CBD, and many people find what works for them within a week or two.

The overriding principle is to start slow and start low. Say, for example, you purchased CBD Oil for sublingual application. Go according to the serving size of the product (around 10-20mg of CBD) and take things from there. You also need to bear in mind that when taking CBD orally or in oil form, it can take up to two hours for the full effects to be felt.

From there, one can wait for the effects to kick in and see whether or not they were on point with their initial dose. Some people may feel too tired or a little lethargic if they took too much; others will feel nothing if they didn’t take enough. It’s also a common mistake to think that the effects, especially orally, will come on immediately and patience is required to find the sweet spot. There are also cases where CBD doesn’t work at all for some people, and that is simply a reality, even if it is rare.

Guide To CBD Dosing

Let’s start with the fact that, due to a lack of research, there’s no official or regulated serving size or dose for CBD. Every person is different when it comes to CBD, so trial and error is the first port of call. Another thing to bear in mind is that CBD is counterintuitive in a certain way. ‘Less is more’ is the principle here as just the right dose of CBD in the system is way better than too much when it comes to effectiveness.

Another factor to keep in mind is that CBD takes time to build up to the right levels. For that reason, it’s recommended to take it 1-3 times per day for at least a week before deciding whether it’s working for you or not. Of course we recommend starting at the lowest CBD dose possible – whether it’s with CBD oil, CBD vape or CBD edibles, and sticking with that for a few days. You can then go ahead and increase the dose by around 5mg until you feel the results you were hoping for. While it very much depends on what your body weight and BMI is, here is a general rule of thumb for CBD dosage levels:

  • Low Dose: 5-30MG
  • Medium Dose: 30-40MG
  • High Dose: 40-50MG
  • Very High Dose: 50-100MG

This is “per dose” meaning one would take that amount of CBD (in MG) 1-3 times daily or as directed by their healthcare provider (or the label on the bottle).

CBD Dosing For Different Conditions

People with certain conditions, pain for example, might need prolonged dosing

As mentioned, due to the lack of studies on humans, there is no solid dosage guide for CBD when it comes to various conditions. It’s also a very personal thing as what works for some doesn’t work for others. With that said, we are here to guide you, and even though it may not be very scientific, there are some established principles when it comes to dosing with CBD for different reasons.

  • Pain and Inflammation – Many pain and inflammation sufferers opt for CBD Oil or CBD Edibles. The reason for this is down to the slow release that occurs when active compounds are taken via the stomach. When taken orally, CBD Oil is considered to be longer-lasting too. Those wanting instant relief from pain may opt for CBD vape juice or CBD flowers.
  • Insomnia – It’s impossible to function properly in daily life without the right amount of sleep. Pharmaceutical sleeping medications will sure do the trick for most people, but they come at a price. That’s why many people choose CBD for insomnia. CBD Oil and CBD Edibles are the choices of many when it comes to sleep, also due to the slow release of the CBD. Although, for people who find it hard to fall asleep but not to stay asleep, CBD Vape Juice or CBD Flowers are a good option.
  • Anxiety and Panic Attacks – For anxiety sufferers, day-to-day life can be a treacherous and very unpleasant path, especially for those who suffer from panic attacks, which can strike anywhere and at any time. CBD Vape Juice or CBD Flowers (smoked or vaporized) are often the choices for anxiety as they enter the bloodstream via the lungs. This means that the effects of the CBD are felt instantly and peak within 5-10 minutes.

Final Word About CBD Dosing

Having understood in more detail how CBD dosing works, we have to remember that there are no steadfast, official dosing guidelines for this natural compound. The great thing is that the self-titration, trial, and error route is a relatively simple one and not dangerous in any way. But it’s also vital to mention another thing, and that’s quality.

If the CBD you are purchasing – whether in oil or vape form – is not of a high standard with a good concentration of CBD extract, you could be wasting your time. You’ll usually want to look for CBD products that are either broad-spectrum or full-spectrum, but for some conditions isolate is preferred.

Verified, third-party lab results are also important. These results, provided free of charge by all reputable CBD companies, confirm that there are no solvents, pesticides or other nasty chemicals in the product. They also offer a full cannabinoid and terpene profile so you can see exactly how much CBD you’re getting. Always do your research and always read the label.
