For many of us, our furry friends are more than just pets, they’re members of the family. When it come to keeping them healthy, they deserve the best just like us.
Medical cannabis is taking the United States by storm with over half the states having some type of MMJ program available to residents. In recent months, an advisory panel to the FDA officially recommended that they approve a CBD based epilepsy medication, Epidiolex. At this point, it’s no surprise that CBD has found its way into the veterinary world as a treatment option for pets.
CBD for pets makes perfect sense considering the fact that every mammal has an endocannabinoid system, which is a network of receptors that are responsible for regulating various body functions like appetite, hormones, sleep-wake cycles, and more.
Vet-certified CBD products are fairly new, but animals seem to benefit from the compound just as much as humans do. It’s important the you buy well-reputed products, as the correct concentration and formulation can be the tipping point between effective treatment or adverse side effects.
“We guarantee that the pet will have a positive, therapeutic reaction. Everything we do is based on science. It’s health and wellness. It all comes down to wanting to make the supplements available to pets, as they should be, Reilly said. We had the sophistication and research to do that. We had people coming up to us at trade shows with these positive, anecdotal results on the human level, and thanking us for putting this in the pet category.” Bill Reilly, founder of company Reilly’s HempVet.
So far, we’re mostly working with anecdotal evidence since very few legitimate studies have been done. Pet owners of various species – including cats, dogs, bids, horses, rodents, and even skunks – have reported positive results with consistent CBD use.
Just like in humans, CBD can work the same for pets and treat a myriad of conditions such as seizures, inflammation, poor immune health, neurocognitive impairment, weak joint functions, anxiety, pain and so much more.
