Is Google Opening Adsense For Medical Cannabis Websites?

Medical Cannabis Adsense
Written by Ofer Shoshani

A brave move from Google; medical Cannabis websites can finally monetize their sites using AdSense. Is medical cannabis becoming legit?

It’s official, Google has just announced today (Saturday), that they are opening Adsense for Medical Cannabis websites! This is a brave but long-expected announcement from the search giant, since medical cannabis websites have always had problems monetizing traffic and adsense can solve this for them. From the announcement (see below), it is clear that Google has been “sitting” on this issue for a very long time, since in the last six months they have been secretly allowing a few select websites to test a “limited Adsense” and only now are they opening it to the whole industry.

Our own personal experience with Adsense

We at CannaTech.news, as one of the few selected websites that have been included in the program from the start, are happy to share our experience with other websites. The bottom line: Go, go, go! Adsense is a great monetization program for you, as long as your main audience comes from the following countries: United States, Canada, Israel, Australia, and UK. Using Adsense with other countries may still bring you profit, but you’d need to test it against your current monetization program (with one of the free geo-redirect plugins/tools), and only then fully migrate your website.

Medical Cannabis yes, recreational no

While the Adsense program is immediately open to all Medical Cannabis websites, sites offering ‘recreational’ Cannabis are still out of the question. Google terms are leaving no doubt that this distinction won’t be changed any time soon.

“We want to help keep people safe both online and offline, so we don’t allow the promotion of some products or services that cause damage, harm, or injury. For this reason, Google ads may not be placed on pages that sell or promote recreational drugs and drug-related content”
(support.google.com)

Finally a good monetization solution for sites in the medical cannabis industry.

Update #1: Google isn’t allowing medical cannabis websites, yet. Hopefully, by the next April fools’ day, it will really happen.

Update #2: Now Google is allowing medical cannabis websites to use AdSense… at last! However, since they are not allowing a lot of advertisers to buy AdWords traffic, most of the ads are irrelevant or triggered by the visitors own cookies placed on other websites. We will continue to update you once the situation becomes better for advertisers seeking to monetize their medical cannabis websites.

Update#3: Google Adwords still doesn’t allow medical cannabis to promote CBD products and even to link to them. Therefore, if you have a medical cannabis website, that covers news and research, the fact alone that you have links to companies that actively sell CBD products, is enough for Adwords to disapprove your site…
